If you have explored the blog you may already know that back in 1999 I set out to create what would be in my opinion “the best local directory”. Since then I have continued to research what businesses want, and without doubt the most common answer is “we want to be found“.

The problem we all have is that it is getting much harder to rank high on search engines. Plus there is so much competition, the other problem directory owners face is that many businesses are simply going out of business, leaving the directory with out dated information. Which means pages have to be deleted, this is something we all regret doing, as this can cause problems when Google and other search engines re-index the site. Missing pages can interrupt the spiders and it may be a while before they return. Of course we can put fancy redirects in but this can also have it’s problems.

The other points to consider are, although my objective is to provide the businesses with what they want the biggest frustration comes from getting traffic for a businesses that is no longer in business, this infuriates some visitors who attack you personally for sending them to a business website that is no longer there. The answer is…. charge a fee.
