Do you need SEO?
In my opinion Search Engine Optimisation is being over hyped, and here’s why. 95% of optimisation is basically commonsense. Unfortunately many of the people selling this service are what I would call bandwagon jumpers, they are simply jumping on the bandwagon. This is because many of the businesses that have websites simply don’t have the time to investigate how simple some of the optimisation processes are.
So they fall for these bandits who promise a stampede of traffic, and that all important first page listing on the mighty Google Search Engine. They talk the talk, they will spout off about the importance of H1 tags and keyword density, Google Algorithms, backlinks, blah, blah bloody blah. When in 95% of all cases what matters most is relevancy. Basically if your site is more relevant than your competitors then more often than not you will rank high on search engines. The big problem is what is relevant? And how do you stay within the boundaries?
The safest bet is to keep it simple.
The first thing you must do is you must have control and access to your own Google Analytics, not that long ago many website owners got excited over the number of hits their websites where getting. What you need to know now is where, what and how long.
Where are they coming from, i.e. location, What keywords they are using to find your site, how long are they staying.
The first thing to do once you have embedded the Analytics code on your website is to check that your site has been indexed by Google. You can do this by simply typing in the following to Googles search bar site:yourdomain.com
If your site has been indexed by Google you will see a list of results, these will be the pages that google has indexed from your website. The important thing to make a note of are the page titles. Basically these need to be relevant to the criteria you wish to be found for.
Note: That each page should have a different title where necessary and be relevant to the content on that page. Underneath the title you will see a description, in the majority of cases this is taken from the information the the <Meta Name=”Description”> This needs to be relevant but above all make sense to the reader, think of it as a strap line with a call to action. Remember you are competing with the other results on the page, if yours is more relevant to the visitor or evokes curiosity yours is the one they are most likely to click, you don’t always have to be No1, being the most relevant counts for everything in my book.

Great tips. I agree that many, many people have jumped aboard the SEO bandwagon and started offering their services and quite frankly ripping people off! Makes my blood boil as those of us who actually know our stuff and are trying to earn a decent living are the ones suffering!
